The origins of the Educational and Research Center for Pedagogy and Psychology Issues date back to the end of 1993, when the Scientific and Methodological Center “Ukrainian Ethnopedagogy and Ethnology” of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian University was established (Director – R. P. Skulskyi, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Professor, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine).
Over more than thirty years of activity, this structural unit of the University underwent several renamings and reorganizations. In 2012, the Institute was established on the basis of the Scientific and Methodological Center “Ukrainian Ethnopedagogy and Ethnology” of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine and the State Higher Educational Institution “Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University” (Head – Volodymyr I. Kononenko, Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor, Academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine).
In 2014, the Educational and Research Institute of Sociocultural Development of Children and Youth was renamed the Educational and Research Institute for Pedagogy and Psychology Issues, which operated in close cooperation with the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine. As an Academician of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine, V. I. Kononenko served as an advisor to the President of the Academy, V. H. Kremen, and actively participated in the Academy’s activities.
Researchers of the Institute were involved in cooperation with groups of academic and teaching staff of the University and research institutes of the National Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine. In recent years, scholars have worked on a number of research problems, including:
-
scientific and methodological support for the self-identification of pupils and students;
-
a psychological and pedagogical concept of integrated study of the Ukrainian language, literature, culture, and history in higher education for the formation of national self-awareness of student youth;
-
processes of development of the modern Ukrainian language in the context of reforming higher education in Ukraine.
The Center’s researchers published collective monographs with the participation of leading scholars, including “Youth Self-Identification” and “Ukrainian Priority: Nation, Society, Culture”, and organized international scientific conferences on youth self-identification and on the study of the Ukrainian language in higher education institutions of Ukraine.
In 2025, another reorganization of the institution took place, resulting in the establishment of the Educational and Research Center for Pedagogy and Psychology Issues. The main purpose of its activity is psychological and pedagogical support of the education system, creation of a national value-oriented educational environment for institutions of various types, and implementation of new developments in pedagogy, psychology, and related sciences in preschool institutions, general secondary schools, and higher education institutions of Ukraine, among others.
